October of 1987 was a dick punch of a month. The Tigers pulled off one of the greatest late season comebacks of all-time and then promptly fell on their faces in the ALCS. At the time, no one would've guessed it would be 19 more years before they would make the postseason again.
I was pretty much out of the hobby at that point. I bought a few packs here and there over the summer but I never cared for the design of any of the 3 sets (still don't really) to do much more than that.
I made up for lost time at some point though, because there wasn't a whole lot out there when I went shopping last month to fill in the gaps. I did find some cool stuff though.
I mentioned last month that I have never PC'd my namesake. Well after picking up over 100 of his cards on Sportlots, I am now!
Continuing the Memphis State University alumni collection. (I will admit that the Dodgers cards look pretty snazzy in '87 Fleer)
Speaking of alumni collections, it's odd to me that I've never put one together for University of Maine baseball players, where I attended my first two years of college from '86-'88 (I do have a collection of hockey players). At the very least I should have a Mark Sweeney collection since we actually attended Maine at the same time. Hmmm...
Those damn Fleer guys...
These things are dirt cheap and after I picked up a partial lot I discovered I had a complete team set tucked away in a box of oddball Tigers. These will never even make it to binder.
Another case of buying something I think I already have.
Can't remember if this completes the team set or not but I'm thinking it's close.
I can remember a time when you could find Classic sets everywhere at card shows for next to nothing. Neither of those things are true anymore.
Oddly, Coke had a license and M&M did not.
For the second year in a row this was the best set of the year.
This is the standard size card, not to be confused with its smaller look alike card that was in packs of Mini League Leaders and Traded sets. I know, '87 was a slow month for me...
One of the coolest things that Donruss ever released. I could've sworn I had this set, but it was the '86 set that I already had. Well now I have both. Someday when I own a mansion I will have an entire wall of shelves dedicated to every one of these folded out as intended. And I will have Whitaker right next to Gooden, as it should be (Sweet Lou homered off Doc in the game).
That wraps it up this year for 1987. I plan on this being a yearly thing of going back & collecting a different year of the 80's each month, but I don't have a whole lot left out there for 1987. Oh well, there's always something out there lurking around the corner.

My October '87 was the highlight of the decade, but I agree on the cards, pretty unmemorable and I wasn't collecting that year either.
I did manage to buy some packs of the Donruss punch-outs though, don't know why. I still like them and I should complete the set, it can't be tough to do.
